4. Flannel Shirts and Button Downs
Flannel shirts are a signature piece in the tomboy aesthetic. Originally inspired by workwear and outdoor clothing, flannels add warmth and texture to an outfit. They are typically made from soft woven cotton, which makes them comfortable and breathable.
Plaid patterns are the most common, but solid colors also work well. Red, green, navy, and earthy tones match easily with denim. Flannel shirts can be worn open over a T shirt, tied around the waist, or buttoned up for a structured look.
Preparation is simple. Choose a flannel that is slightly oversized for layering. During cooler seasons, wear it under a denim or bomber jacket. In warmer weather, roll up the sleeves and leave it open over a tank top. Button down shirts in plain cotton or oxford material also fit the aesthetic. They create a slightly sharper version of the tomboy look, especially when paired with straight leg trousers.
